Extreme Heat Causes Fatigue and Impairs Judgement

‘It’s been a real struggle for us … because of the heat. You never know how your body is going to react until it starts to go down.’ - Co-worker of UPS driver Chris Begley, who collapsed during his route in Dallas and later died.

Industry, scientific and military studies conclude that extreme heat increases risk of injury and lapses of judgment, resulting in disruptions to the supply chain.

Although the ambient temperature may be 80°F, due to a variety of factors including environment and humidity, the heat-related effects on humans and animals is as if the temperature was 20°F or more higher.Businesses who have a workforce that delivers goods or works outside are having to cope with this loss of efficiency and rising health, medical and liability costs.

Hurricanes, Tornados and Floods Are Now Seasonal Occurances

From Government Reports – Storm inundation levels during tropical storms and hurricane surge events will increase due to sea level rise, anticipated to rise by about 2 to 3 ft (0.4 to 0.8 meters) by 2100. This sea level rise will contribute to significantly more coastal destruction and increased economic damages.

Rainfall rate within tropical storms and hurricanes is anticipated to have a 15% increase.

Numbers of Atlantic hurricanes reaching Category 4 and 5 intensity is projected to increase about 10% increase.

Category 3 Hurricane Milton with 120 mph sustained winds made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida on October 9. In addition to the destructive winds, a storm surge of 5 to 10 feet cased damage from Naples to Charlotte Harbor.

Category 4 Hurricane Helene with 140 mph sustained winds was the strongest hurricane on record to strike the Big Bend region of Florida having made landfall near Perry, Florida on September 26. Helene was a massive storm and the third hurricane to hit the Big Bend region in just over a year. It caused up to 15 feet of storm surge along the Big Bend coast and six feet of surge as far south as St. Petersburg. It also caused billions of dollars in damage to Georgia's agriculture sector

Category 1 Hurricane Debby made landfall on August 5 near Steinhatchee, Florida with 80 mph sustained winds and a second landfall near Bulls Bay, South Carolina as a tropical storm on August 8. Debby produced over 10 inches of rainfall from southwestern Florida up through the coastal sections of Georgia and the Carolinas. Debby continued to track up the East Coast affecting numerous states with heavy rain, flash flood and river flooding and strong winds. A frontal system merged with the remnants of Debby that led to flash flooding in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and southeastern New York. This interaction also produced an EF-1 tornado that impacted Buffalo, New York.

The NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) has released the final update to its 2023 Billion-dollar disaster report, confirming a historic year in the number of costly disasters and extremes throughout much of the country. There were 28 weather and climate disasters in 2023, surpassing the previous record of 22 in 2020, tallying a price tag of at least $92.9 billion.
